Founded in 1895 by the Community of the Sisters of the Church, St Michael’s Grammar School is an independent Anglican co-educational school located in the inner-city suburb of St Kilda, offering early learning and K-12 education. From early 2020 to late 2023, Kneeler Design Architects was engaged by St Michael’s Grammar School to provide a Facilities Management Plan (FMP) that will form a strategic framework for the delivery of projects aligned with the school’s vision for the future.
From the outset, it was determined that the school’s illustrious history and the unique qualities of its urban campus are to be appreciated and enhanced. The campus layout in the FMP would reflect a connected learning journey from the youngest to the most senior and beyond. In line with St Michael’s educational vision of ‘creative inquiring minds learning from, with, and for the world’, access points and facilities are planned to allow for engagement with the broader community.
The FMP incorporates the school’s acquisition strategy of surrounding properties to ensure a logical future expansion of the campus. Existing facilities for possible adaptive reuse, refurbishment or demolition are identified, alongside projects that would allow for suitable decanting options at each stage to enable the uninterrupted functionality of the school.
